Museums in Western Australia - City of Perth, Fremantle Harbor and Greater Perth Area Museums
Welcome to our series on Museums in Western Australia. This is the second article in the series, and we invite you to enjoy it and refer to the first article easily through this link. This article will expose locations and collection details for museums in the vicinity of Perth, Western Australia. Greater Metropolitan Perth includes a wide range of museums from ancient history, more cultural and contemporary themes including motor sports, nature, and the arts.
The partial list of museums and the interactive map we generated using csv2geo covered the regions along the western and northern coastal areas of Western Australia. We had already introduced you to a broad history of Australia and the structure of states and regions. If you recall from the first article the large, sparsely populated State of Western Australia is broken up into regions.
The city of Perth takes its name from Captain James Sterling who named it to acknowledge Perth, Scotland back in 1829. At that time, the area was very remote, and the British Navy was securing a port in what is now known as Fremantle Harbor. This major harbor was established at the far west end of the Australian continent, over 2,600 KM from the next major state capitol of Adelaide in the state of South Australia (Western Australia’s neighbor to the east). Perth is a magnificent modern port city with a mixture of historic interest and contemporary skyscraper glass towers intertwined with elegant walkways and parks and lots of water to support the basic need of life as well as a rich life filled with recreation and appreciation for nature.
As we discover this land of enchantment, let us keep in mind how remote this place really is. This city of Perth with roughly 2 Million people. Almost the same as Metropolitan San Diego, California have no significant large urban area between themselves and their closest major urban neighbor, in the next state, by a distance roughly equal to San Diego’s distance to Houston, Texas. So, Imagine San Diego, all by itself on the west coast of California, no Los Angeles, no San Francisco (or any other major city in California), no Portland, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Salt Lake City, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Austin, San Antonio. Just a lot of wide-open, sun-soaked land with some small towns and outposts clinging to the southern coastline highway. Or, in European terms, the distance from Perth, Western Australia to Adelaide, South Australia is about the same as between Perth, Scotland, UK to The City of Rome, Italy.
It’s startling to imagine such open spaces. No wonder Australians tend to fly, having over 400 airports in a nation of just under 26 Million. That’s just a few more folks than all of Pennsylvania and Ohio combined. Or, again in European perspective, just a few less folks in Australia than all of Belgium and The Netherlands, combined. This type of segregation has fostered a unique history of gritty survival and wild opportunity for the people strong enough to survive and thrive against that awesome challenge. In this, the second in a series of articles, we will identify the locations and content of museums of the Greater Perth, Western Australia metropolitan areas for your interest and enjoyment. We hope this will serve as a guide to stimulate your curiosity and imagination to what people can endure and achieve if given the freedom to build. We also hope you enjoy this series of articles. Please look for subsequent articles covering more of the fascinating Land Down Under.

Detail InfoLocated on the beautiful banks of the Canning River, the Museum collection is housed in the State Heritage listed Wilkinson Homestead. The site has an interesting history that includes early European settlement, and the district''s agricultural development. The Museum property and adjacent park are part of the 1829 land grant to pioneer John Okey Davis. The homestead, built in 1912, is on one of the largest citrus producing properties in nineteenth century Western Australia. Replica buildings, including the machinery shed, dunny and washhouse reflect life in earlier times. The collection features textiles, agricultural machinery, domestic equipment, furniture, historic photographs and paintings significant to local history. In mid 2006 the Museum received a donation of a beautifully restored vintage Essex motor car. This 1927 vehicle, formerly owned by local man Cyril Newton, was driven throughout Gosnells in the 1930s and attracted much attention, as cars, particularly of this type, were a relatively rare sight. This donation to the City by the Amaroo Village Board is a truly significant and greatly appreciated gift. It is currently on display in the main shed at the City''s Museum. The Museum is an attractive site for group visits and is available outside normal opening hours by request, for weddings or other group gatherings. The Museum can accommodate people with special needs. Chairs and tables can be provided. Please contact Heritage Services staff on 9397 3144 to discuss requirements. The Museum appreciates donations of objects, photographs and archival material relevant to the City of Gosnells. The Museum’s collection policy is available below or you may wish to contact Heritage Services staff on 9397 3144 to discuss your opportunity to add to the collection. Donations of objects or funds may be tax deductible and acquisition forms are available on the History and heritage donations page. Community support is essential to the operation of the Museum. The gaol contained a basement, chapel, gaoler’s quarters, cells, and a prisoners’ yard, in which executions would take place. Prisoners would be executed here throughout the buildings life as a prison. Pictured, Perth Gaol in 1860, four years after construction was complete and the first prisoners were transferred here.

Detail Info: PICA incorporated in 1989 but its emergence was preceded by the commitment and hard work undertaken over five years by its founders. Securing PICA’s eventual location, in what was originally the Perth Central School in the heart of the Cultural Centre was fundamental to that process. The new organisation partly, ‘follow[ed] on from Praxis (Western Australia’s former Contemporary Art Space now amalgamated with PICA), which had a fifteen-year history of producing an important program of visual arts exhibitions, publications and special projects. Praxis had been a part of a network of contemporary art spaces across Australia, organisations which had their origins in the alternative spaces of the 1970s, and which at their best have been critical, challenging and provocative.

Detail Info: The Perth Mint opened in 1899 in response to the discovery of rich gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. It was Australia''s third branch of Britain''s Royal Mint - the others being the Sydney Mint and the Melbourne Mint (both closed). Diggers, who flocked to the then colony of Western Australia in huge numbers from other parts of Australia and from around the world, deposited their raw gold with us where it was refined and minted into gold coins. Gold refining continually took place at our original Hay Street premises until April 1990, when the operation was moved to a modern facility in Perth’s eastern suburbs. Between 1899 and 1931, we struck more than 106 million gold sovereigns and nearly 735,000 half sovereigns for use as currency in Australia and throughout the British Empire.
